Patient Frequently Asked Questions
» Does Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion work on all types and colors of skin?
Yes, because unlike laser treatments and chemical peels, the Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion treatment gradually treats the skin.
» How can I be sure that my surgeon has adequate training?
Good credentials can`t guarantee a successful outcome; however, they can significantly increase the likelihood of it. Patients are advised to find a doctor who has attended recent training courses for certification in their specialty.
» How do I know if I need microdermabrasion?
Your physician or certified aesthetician can best evaluate your skin condition through a complete consultation including a recommended treatment plan that will be specifically designed for your Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion needs. This will include the specified number of treatments and the time interval between each. Any issues or concerns you may have will be discussed. You may request a sample of the Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion treatment on your hand to validate its effectiveness and that it is virtually painless. Patients, who are in good general health, possess proper skin tone and a desire for realistic results are excellent candidates for microdermabrasion.
» How much does the procedure cost?
Genesis Biosystems does not control the price, but on average a microdermabrasion treatment costs about $150 per procedure.
» What does Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion feel like?
Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion is a painless, natural and safe procedure. Some patients experience a slight tingling sensation.
» What is a facelift?
A facelift or “rhytidectomy” is a surgical procedure designed to improve the most visible signs of the aging process by eliminating excess fat, tightening the muscles beneath the skin of the neck, and removing sagging skin. It doesn`t stop the aging process but merely “sets the clock back”.
» What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is the surgical vacuuming of fat from beneath the surface of the skin. It is used to reduce fullness in any area of the body. It is an excellent method of spot reduction but is not an effective method of weight loss.
» What is the tumescent technique?
The tumescent technique involves injection beneath the skin of large volumes of salt water containing lidocaine, a local anesthetic and small amounts of adrenaline, a naturally occurring hormone which shrinks blood vessels. By injecting this solution to the fat prior to performing liposuction the plastic surgeon numbs the tissues and shrinks the blood vessels thereby eliminating pain and reducing and minimizing bleeding, bruising, and swelling. The tumescent technique permits some patients who were previously treated under general anesthesia to be treated under local anesthesia with sedation.
» What you should know about the safety of outpatient plastic surgery?
When considering plastic surgery, it`s natural to focus more on the expected result than on the surgical process. However, to be fully informed, it`s important to learn about the safety of the procedure as well as the expected outcome. Although thousands of people have plastic surgery every year without complications, no surgical procedure is risk-free. To maximize safety, ensure that:
- your surgeon is adequately trained and is board certified; the facility where your surgery will be performed conforms to strict safety standards
- your surgeon is informed of any drugs you are taking and your full medical history, especially if you have had any circulation disorders, heart or lung ailments or problems with blood clots
- the surgical facility will use skilled, licensed personnel to administer and monitor your anesthesia and your recovery immediately following the procedure
- extra safety measures are taken if you are having a more extensive liposuction procedure.
» Who performs the Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion procedure?
Your Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion procedure is administered under the supervision of a physician or certified aesthetician.
» Why the “Plastic” in plastic surgery?
The word “plastic” comes from the Greek word plastikos, meaning “to mold or shape.” Many of the first plastic surgeries were developed to close a difficult wound or replace tissue lost due to injury or cancer. These procedures often involved the formation of a skin flap to reshape or mold the defect so as to approximate the original shape.
Product Frequently Asked Questions
» Do you offer more than one type of hand piece?
Genesis Biosystems currently offers only one type of hand piece. Our hand piece is the Ergonomic, Dual-Mode Hand Piece which utilizes disposable tip caps for asceptic face and body size peels. This soft grip hand piece allows crystal and crystal-free abrasion in models with the Plug-n-Peel™ Closed Canister Microdermabrasion System and our older Derma Genesis systems. With this hand piece, the operator can customize peels based on the skin care requirements of the patient. The disposable tip caps are sold in 90 degree and body size crystal-free tip caps (180 or 240 Grit size) and 45 degree angle tip caps for use with aluminum oxide or sodium bicarbonate crystal. The crystal free tip caps cannot be used with the old systems.
» What is the difference between Aluminum Oxide Crystal and Sodium Bicarbonate Crystal?
Aluminum Oxide Crystals have multiple facets on the surface of each crystal, which gives a more aggressive peel as compared to Sodium Bicarbonate. Sodium Bicarbonate Crystal, an alternative to Aluminum Oxide Crystal, is water-soluble and is designed as a non-abrasive polishing agent.

Professional Frequently Asked Questions
» Do you sell to aestheticians or only to doctors?
Genesis Biosystems has specifically designed Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion machines for both physicians and certified aestheticians. See our Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion products page for specific system details.
» Does eye protection need to be worn during a Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion treatment?
Genesis Biosystems recommends using eye protection such as our Eye-A-Peel™ disposable eye pads.
» How often do I need to change the filters on my Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion machine?
Genesis Biosystems recommends that in older versions of Derma Genesis® Medical Microdermabrasion Systems (those without Plug-n-Peel™), the primary filter be discarded after each bottle of crystal is used. This equates to approximately 10 Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion procedures per filter. The secondary filter should be rotated to the primary filter position immediately after the primary filter has been discarded and the secondary filter should be replaced with a new filter at that time.
» Is the Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion treatment available only in the United States?
No. Genesis Biosystems distributes and sells its full line of Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion machines worldwide.
» What do I need to do to prepare the skin before a Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion treatment?
Always use a gentle, oil-free cleanser to remove any makeup or oils from the skin prior to Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion. The skin must be clean and dry before any Derma Genesis® microdermabrasion procedure can be performed.
» What type of “after sale” support do you offer regarding the servicing of equipment and follow up training visits?
